Sophumelela Centre

Sophumelela is a faith-based organization located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, providing holistic health, education, and economic development programs to people who are infected with and affected by HIV. While serving all people in greater East London since 2000, Sophumelela primarily supports Xhosa-speaking Africans who live in the large townships or squatter camps throughout the city.

As one of the only indigenous organizations supplying state-of-the-art HIV care and treatment services in the Eastern Cape, Sophumelela uses a comprehensive approach to supporting those affected by HIV. Working to improve the client’s entire life, including his or her household, Sophumelela provides:

• HIV testing and treatment,
• Patient adherence monitoring,
• Home-based care,
• Counseling,
• Childcare and primary education,
• Psychosocial and nutrition support,
• Palliative care, and
• Skills building, job creation, and placement.

Sophumelela has reached nearly 4,000 people through these comprehensive services and hopes to expand in the coming years to meet the needs of the community and national priorities.
